Course Overview
This course not only informs you about the significant risks associated with working with asbestos but also provides a deeper understanding of how to safely manage and mitigate those risks. You will gain valuable insights into:
- Recognising Asbestos: Learn to identify the different forms of asbestos and understand where it may be present in buildings and materials, even in environments where it might not be obvious. You’ll be able to spot potential asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) in both commercial and residential settings, which is crucial for avoiding accidental exposure.
- Where Asbestos is Used: Understand the historical and modern applications of asbestos in construction and industrial sectors. The course covers the areas in which asbestos was commonly used and provides guidance on identifying old materials and structures that may still contain asbestos, such as insulation, roofing, flooring, and even some fireproofing materials.
- Minimising the Risks: Learn about the proper safety measures and techniques for working with or around asbestos. This includes protective equipment, risk assessment procedures, safe handling practices, and the steps to take in case of accidental exposure. You will gain an understanding of how to reduce the chances of disturbing asbestos-containing materials and how to deal with them safely when renovation or demolition work is required.
- Legislation and Legal Requirements: Dive into the legislation surrounding asbestos, including health and safety regulations. You’ll be introduced to the laws that govern the management and removal of asbestos in the workplace, such as the Control of Asbestos Regulations and the responsibilities of employers and employees. This will ensure you are aware of the compliance requirements for working with asbestos and how to protect both workers and the environment from potential harm.
By the end of this course, you will not only be able to recognise the risks posed by asbestos but also understand the necessary precautions and legal obligations to ensure a safe working environment.
